The secret of health in old age

Researches that were began in 2007 with name of Wellderly and with the aim of identifying the genetic variables involved in health throughout the life time, now includes the results of implementing the complete genome sequence to the DNA of more than 1,400 US healthy volunteers citizens between the ages of 80 to 105 years. According to the Science, this research is the first example of researches that was conducted by using the large-scale of genome sequencing to investigate the health status of people. In this study, instead of investigating the causes and effects of one or more disease on human, the researchers are looking for sustainable health reasons. To achieve the desired results, the researchers were compared the genome of 600 research volunteers of Wellderly  who did not have any disease, including cancer, stroke, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, diabetes, heart attack and so on, with the genomes of 1507 normal adult people who were represent of the public, using by genome sequencing platforms, known as Complete Genomics. After examining the blood and ethnic relations, the 511 elderly volunteers and 686 normal volunteers remained to DNA analyze and researchers compared the 24 million and 205 thousand and 551 genes of them. As a result of this experiment, it is turned out the risk of cardiovascular disease and Alzheimer's of Wellderly program volunteers is less than others. Despite, there were no differences in the genetic risk of heart attack and type 2 diabetes between these two groups. The researchers concluded that Wellderly program volunteers had ethnic or certain behaviors features that protect them against some diseases. They also believe that continuing the Wellderly research program can provide the needed genetic insight to properly understand of the healthy aging process. The most important result of this research is identifying the protecting the genetic measures against heart disease and Alzheimer's. The result of this research is published in the "Cell" journal.
